Becoming a Music Therapist

Have you ever wondered what it takes to become a music therapist? In order to become an MTA (Music Therapist Accredited) by the Canadian Association of Music Therapists, one must:

  • Complete a bachelor or master’s level music therapy program at an approved university.
  • Complete 1000 hours of supervised music therapy internship.
  • Pass the American Certification Board for Music Therapists exam.

After 2 years of hard work (and lots of fun), I have officially completed all those requirements and can now call myself an MTA!

Throughout my master’s degree it was important to me that I connect with the Canadian music therapy community, so I made sure to attend the Canadian Association of Music Therapist’s annual conferences.

The Certification Board for Music Therapists exam offers immediate processing of results if the exam is written in the States.  So a few weeks ago I took a day trip to Niagara Falls area to write the exam and take in the sights!
